ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
A message from the folks at 1LTShilling.com
We created the 1LT Austin Shilling Memorial Golf Tournament as a way to honor Austin’s life by supporting other service members. Initially, the tournament only supported a memorial scholarship at Austin’s alma mater, Appalachian State University (read more about the scholarship here).
After the success of the first year, we decided we wanted to expand our reach locally to another cause that supported veterans suffering from PTSD, much like Austin. In a fate-like encounter we found Bev Beres, and her Beres Haus Veteran Program. The second year of the tournament, we not only funded our scholarship for another ROTC student, but also donated $1,000 for a local veteran suffering from PTSD to receive an emotional support/service dog through Bev’s program. Our donation covered vet bills and other incidentals.
Now, with the help of Bev and our new friends at Cannon Recovery we are furthering this cause to reach even more veterans who are suffering. Our mission is to save lives by providing the resources needed for veterans struggling with PTSD. The tournament will support this mission with all proceeds going towards a new branch of Cannon Recovery located here in Atlanta. The hope is to use the money raised to build a recovery center much like Cannon’s existing site in Texas, which will allow us to help them save more lives.
